Persian turquoise has a long and ancient storied history dating to around 4000 BC. It is believed that turquoise mining started in northern Iran at the mines of Neyshapur which are today still being worked today. Persian turquoise has gained a reputation of being among the finest, if not the finest turquoise in the world. Turquoise jewellery has been found in the regions and ruins of ancient civilisations as it traveled on overland trade routes that existed between Iran, Iraq (Sumeria), Turkey, Egypt, Mesopotamia, the Indus Valley, Afghanistan and China. It was traded throughout the known world and greatly revered, always being set in various and beautiful ornamental and jewellery styles.
Over time the Persians also introduced and developed unique aspects of how turquoise was evaluated and cut, highly prizing stones for their clarity, cutting the cabochons so that no signs of the host rock or other impurities would be visible once set, so that just the deep blue hues could be seen. Because of this it is rare to get turquoise cabs of high clarity bigger than a small coin. Today, Persian turquoise is still rare in fine qualities and highly desired.
This fine Persian turquoise oval cabochon is one of a suite of gems and together make a rare offering. The gem faces up ideal with a solid deep sky-blue hue and is much nicer than the pics suggest. It is a beautiful turquoise gem when viewed in the hand. It is perfectly sized and shaped for any jewellery setting.
The underside has some rudimentary backing applied but it will not be visible once set.

A reverse intaglio carving done in Indian bloodstone featuring a boar and the phrase Vi Et Virtute which translates into something along the lines of through strength and courage.
A reverse intaglio is a carving that is done with the intention of it being used as a wax seal so that the impression left in the wax is able to be read correctly. These have traditionally most often been used as signet rings.
This was a commission piece I carved recently. If you would like your own reverse intaglio carving done please contact me.

In nature, so it is said, true blue roses do not exist, that they symbolise mystery and the unattainable, and among some cultures there is a tradition that the owner of a blue rose shall have all their wishes granted. Wouldn't that be lovely.
So perhaps the next best thing is a gem carved from a blue stone in the form of a rose, something that will last forever and never fade.
I carved this rose gem in London blue topaz as I thought the colour would be absolutely perfect. The deep rich striking blue is what I’ve always imagined in my mind’s eye when I think of a blue rose. And like all varieties of roses they all have a name, and I have named mine the Blue Jubilee.

Truly an exceptional well matched pair of Zambian emeralds. Straight off the bat, let me say that the pics do not come anywhere near doing these emeralds justice. Emeralds are notoriously difficult to photograph due to the chromium, it messes with the camera's lens somehow. That said, the colour when viewed in the hand it superb, it is exactly what you would want when you think of deep, verdant emerald green. The Zambian emeralds are known for their brightness and clarity and these gems are quite bright and lively. They are a very well matched pair in every regard and will make an stunning pair of earrings without any doubt.

Oh how I love this seafoam green colour! This beautiful beryl from Madagascar has one of my all time favorite colours, a soft gorgeous seafoam green. This hue is really only seen in beryl and garnet. With this particular gem there is also a touch of blue coming through as well which is lovely. Beryl is the family which has as members aquamarine (blue), emerald (green with chromium/vanadium) morganite (pink), heliodor (yellow), bixbite (red) and others. Australian black nephrite jade is really beautiful stone to work it. It's really tough stuff and I've read a few times that due to its particular mineral structure it's one of the toughest materials in nature. I've carved this piece with a motif of scales, like a fish, lizard or perhaps a dragon. I wanted to imbue the piece with a sense of providing protection to the wearer. I've also carved a toggle black nephrite jade that comes with the piece. This piece is intended to be worn as a pendant.

A fine Australian blue topaz that I have worked to capture a winter scene using a combination of the natural surface etching and polished facets. This beautiful crystal has intrigued me for a long time. Whenever I looked within I could see a winter scene, the etching on several of the crystal surfaces looked a lot like snow and a tree in the background. The snow had collected in drifts and I could imagine myself there in the quiet space of that scene. I have worked and polished the crystal and retained as much of the original natural etching as possible to create this unique piece. It is very had to show the scene well in the pictures and videos, it really is one that you need to hold in your hand and gaze within.

I do love the soft pastel blue hue of Turkish blue chalcedony, it is something quite lovely to behold. When carved in this style it really seems to accentuate the stone's glow and translucency. This is a very fine piece of blue chalcedony which, as I began carving it, brought to mind those striking naturally shaped and weathered stones that came from certain areas in China and were traditionally appreciated by Chinese scholars. These scholar's stones were also known as Lingbi stones. So I decided to lean into that idea and tried to capture a feel of steep wind-swept mountains.

Japan had been much on my mind at the time when I was working on the Chrysanthemum designs. I had a trip to Japan coming up soon (my first) about which I was very excited. So I guess alot of that expectation and excitement was channeled into my work at some level. This design came out of a strong urge to create a five sided design based on the Chrysanthemum idea and naturally I knew that I could only call it "Sakura", in honour of the Japanese cherry blossoms that are such an important part of the yearly calendar in this amazing country. This is a design that I am very pleased with. I hope you like it.

A very fine natural garnet from the Tanga region in Tanzania. In the hand it is a beautiful gemstone with a kind of dusky red hue, it’s a colour that is hard to describe but I have included a picture of a glass of sangiovese red wine I had the same evening I cut the garnet and it was pretty close. So I would call it wine coloured. It is so much nicer then the pics and the garnet is quite bright and lively. The gem does have some very minor silk inclusions with is common to garnets. A very striking garnet.

A nice bright stunning Australian parti sapphire that I freeform cut creating a totally unique gemstone. When I freeform cut a gemstone I don't follow a design, rather I intuitively follow the shape of the stone allowing it to dictate the final form of the gem. Freeform cut gems take longer than normal to achieve as they require more problem solving and working out every single angle and facet on the fly.

An outstanding ruby from Mozambique finished in a classic square cushion cut. This ruby is a truly a beautiful gem and the colour is so much better in the hand than the pictures. Ruby has the element chromium present which is what gives ruby it’s red colour and also makes it very hard for the camera to accurate capture. For some reason my camera just can’t do it so this ruby really needs to be seen in real life. All I can say is that if you like the pictures you will love the gem. This ruby will make any outstanding ring stone, truly a world class gem.

This is one of those really magic sapphires that is such a pleasure to see and hold for they rarely come along. Straight up I have to say that the pics do not do this sapphire any justice, the colours are so much nicer in real life. The intense golden yellow is rich, vibrant and eye catching and it is partnered with a teal and together are so beautiful. This gem started out as a very oddly shaped piece of rough and I decided to cut the gem in a freeform style to try and retain and present the parti colours as best as possible. This colour combination is quite scarce and would also make a fine addition to any collection of Australian sapphires.

This carving was done purely for the fun of it. I had an odd shaped piece of rose quartz with beautiful colour but it had a few veils and inclusions to work around. So I just carved it with no preconceived idea of what it was going to be. About half way through I started to think that it looks a bit like a melting marshmallow. Australian topaz is a fantastic gemstone, it always cuts a bright, beautiful silvery gem. This natural topaz comes from O'Briens Creek in North Queensland near a small town called Mt Surprise. About 40km along a dirt road you'll come to O'Briens Creek campground on the banks of the freshwater Elizabeth Creek. On the other side of the creek is a stunning landscape of rugged old pink granite hills and here is found this quite incredible gem.

This is a beautiful Australian sapphire which I have finished in a portrait cut. The green hues are simply divine and so lovely and the saturation really is ideal. This is a sapphire that has instant visual appeal and captures the eye. The gem is relatively shallow, intentionally so which allows the frame like effect to be produced. In the centre is the picture which in this case is a V-like blue colour banding. Sapphires will often have natural colour banding like this as it occurs as part of the original crystal formation. This is a sapphire that I was very happy with how it turned out. The gem would be perfect for a special ring setting especially given it’s low profile. A very unique sapphire and one you will fall in love with.

With this ring I wanted to explore curves and peaks and shoulder with a fantastical edge. My hand would often draw and doodle these sorts of curves and arcs idly on a piece of paper while daydreaming or listening to someone on the phone. At some point it clicked that I had this beautiful pink tourmaline and this vision of it being proudly held aloft by these graceful curves and I knew that I had to draw up a design for a ring.
On a more lighthearted note, my eyes are very much drawn to the particular styling of the shoulders of the ring. They remind me of spaulders and pauldrons which are components of a knight's plate armour that protect the shoulders. More specifically I think of those fantastical suits of armour in that game, World of Warcraft. What must I have been channeling when I designed this ring?
When our beautiful British Blue Shorthair turned three I carved a little thumbnail sized bust of her, carved of course from a sky blue topaz crystal. Wish I could say she was excited by it but after sniffing it for a few moments she lost interest and wandered off. I kept this piece for us. :-)

The third in my Psychonaut series of small sculptures is created from a natural piece of O'Briens Creek citrine that I dug many years ago when I spent some time up that way fossicking for gemstones. I am really enjoying sculpting these pieces, they are a study in patience and attention to detail and they allow me to play and draw out other ways of working with gemstones that I want to explore.
With these pieces in the Psychonaut series I want to try and capture or convey a sense of wonderment and child-like awe, and again in this small sculpture we see my little astral traveller passing through the cosmos silently witnessing beautiful and amazing things taking place. The things he must see, things we would never believe!

This gem was again something of an experiment. I wanted to see how the chrysanthemum design would work in a square cut, when you're creating something new the only way to see how it will look is to do it. I was very pleased with how this turned out. The pattern effect works nicely within the square shape. I named it "Origin" because of a certain metaphysical resonance I had when seeing the design for the first time. In the beginning everything starts from a point and radiates outwards. This creates the "four directions" of north, south, east and west and is embodied in the four sides of the square. It's sort of a creation/origin event story captured in a gem. It's hard to explain in words, sorry about that. It's something that my mind intuitively grasps because of my life story and studies but like a lot of things in life, it's hard to put down into words.

This is a wonderful natural rhodolite garnet from Tanzania that has a soft inner glow that is beguiling and beautiful to behold. The gem has the classic raspberry pinkish red hues that rhodolite is renown for and at night under lights it is truly magnificent. I picked this single particular stone from a large parcel of rhodolite, there was just something about it that sung to me... it had this glow that kept drawing my eye to it. The stone does have some of the usual fine silky needle inclusions (but is otherwise clean) that rhodolite often has and I think this is in part what gives the gem it's special glow. I knew as soon as I saw it that the Supernova Oval would be perfect for it and that was ultimately the design I ended up cutting. I have included some pics of the gem being faceted along with a couple of the original rough stone.

Australian turquoise from Ammaroo Station in the Northern Territory is quite a scarce stone. The deposit is small and has only been sporadically mined over the years. The location is very remote and is situated north-east of Alice Springs, not far from the centre of Australia. High quality turquoise from Ammaroo Station is very rare indeed especially finer grade material that takes a high polish. It is sort after by collectors and makes beautiful jewellery.
This turquoise cabochon is natural, untreated and solid without any backing. It is a fine example of the best quality turquoise from this location and has a high polish. The colour is a beautiful blue hue and very similar to the turquoise from the Number 8 mine in Nevada, USA. I have attached some pics below showing a suite of Ammaroo turquoise and some Number 8 cabs. This piece has been finished in a sugarloaf-style rectangle cushion cabochon.

The chrysanthemum, as well as being one of my favourite flowers, is also a favoured symbol to work with. It's always been there in the background of my life and I see it used as a motif and symbol in virtually every culture in every age. With this piece I wanted to create a golden chrysanthemum so I engraved one onto a disk of quartz crystal which I then inlaid with 24K gold leaf. To that I then joined a disk of lapis lazuli... gold and lapis is a timeless classic combination.
As a jewellery design idea, a matched pair of these or a bespoke pair with your own design would be ideal for cufflinks or singularly as a lapel or tie pin. Would also make a pretty cool ring. If you're interested in something like this, get in touch! :-)

This moon gem is a natural Australian topaz lovely and silvery bright white and the whole idea of this design was to try and represent the full moon with a little star twinkling above. I think it works well. The 18k white gold that the topaz sits in acts as a kind of mirrored cup to capture and reflect the light. The little star is a diamond.

I designed these cufflinks with the concept of turbines in mind. The matched pair of London blue topaz have been cut in my Turbine design and set in 18K white gold. Around the outside of the cufflinks is twisted white gold ribbon which creates the sense of movement, complementing the idea of turbines. A unique and handcrafted pair of cufflinks that can be worn on any occasion.

This is my first chrysanthemum pendant! I wanted to create a nice simple pendant that showed off the main gem without any distractions. I really wanted to emphasize the unique design of the gem, to allow the chrysanthemum petals to stand out and dazzle. I am very happy with how this pendant turned out. :-)

This imperial garnet has lovely apricot hues and I've faceted it in a portrait cut. It does have some natural inclusions that can be seen in the pictures. In the hand the inclusions are not as noticeable and they make for an interesting and distinctive gem especially if you're someone who is fascinated by the inner world of gemstones.

This gem is an exceptional natural Australia sapphire with a wonderful blend of green blue parti colours. It is a particularly fine sapphire and far far nicer in the hand then the pics suggest. This is one of the key stones from an old digger's personal collection and it's one that I've been thinking of maybe keeping for myself and setting as a signet ring. It really is a superb stone and one I very highly recommend.

A true rarity, a matched pair of natural blue indicolite tourmalines! These have been cut from open-c axis tourmaline crystals which gives them an extra brightness and really exceptional colour. It is hard to find a well matched pair of indicolite tourmalines at the best of times let alone finished in the classic Asscher Cut design and at an ideal size for a pair of earrings. The tourmalines look much nicer in the hand then the pics and really do need to be seen to know just how special they are. This pair I very highly recommend especially if you are looking for earrings to match that amaqzing blue indicolite tourmaline ring you have.

A wonderful bright Ceylon blue sapphire finished in a modern rectangle radiant cut. You don’t often see the radiant style design in Ceylon sapphire so it’s great when such a beautiful gem like this one comes along. It is a very dynamic gem with lots of action and life. A really fine sapphire that will be perfect for a ring or any other jewellery setting.
