Zambian Amethysts - Matched Pair Antique Rounds - 4.54ct, 4.55ct
An outstanding matched pair of Zambian amethysts cut in my Antique Round design. The colours and hues in these stones are absolutely beautiful and to see them in the hand is to get an appreciation why the amethyst from this origin is considered some of the finest in the world.
These amethysts also exhibits a quite marked colour shift. Under incandescent lights and natural flames the amethysts show pinkish red hues shifting from the more blue purple hues under normal daylight and fluorescent lights. The pinkish red flashes are quite striking and add another layer of wonder to these gems.
Now, even though I cut these two gems from the same piece of amethyst crystal one is slightly more saturated than the other which just goes to show you how hard it is to get perfectly matched stones in nature. Amethyst is a stone that has colour zones, areas of darker or lighter saturation that are naturally occurring and are formed during the crystal’s growth. It’s pretty much impossible to get the zones orientated in such a way that they are evenly distributed and positioned identically in each gem. It just doesn’t work like that when cutting gemstones.
So even though these are sibling stones and the hues are the same, the saturation varies. Each natural gem is and always will be unique. However they are still a superb matched pair, ideal for a pair of earrings and match another Asscher cut gem from the same parcel of Zambian amethysts.
