When our beautiful British Blue Shorthair turned three I carved a little thumbnail sized bust of her, carved of course from a sky blue topaz crystal. Wish I could say she was excited by it but after sniffing it for a few moments she lost interest and wandered off. I kept this piece for us. :-)

This is an awesome gem! Citrine and my turbine design just work so well together. I love the pattern that the design makes (just like the turbine of a jet engine) and the rich hues of golden citrine just make the gem come alive. The tapered crown and the flat bottom makes this a low profile gemstone and easy to set, an ideal ring or pendant stone.

The third in my Psychonaut series of small sculptures is created from a natural piece of O'Briens Creek citrine that I dug many years ago when I spent some time up that way fossicking for gemstones. I am really enjoying sculpting these pieces, they are a study in patience and attention to detail and they allow me to play and draw out other ways of working with gemstones that I want to explore.
With these pieces in the Psychonaut series I want to try and capture or convey a sense of wonderment and child-like awe, and again in this small sculpture we see my little astral traveller passing through the cosmos silently witnessing beautiful and amazing things taking place. The things he must see, things we would never believe!

This gem was again something of an experiment. I wanted to see how the chrysanthemum design would work in a square cut, when you're creating something new the only way to see how it will look is to do it. I was very pleased with how this turned out. The pattern effect works nicely within the square shape. I named it "Origin" because of a certain metaphysical resonance I had when seeing the design for the first time. In the beginning everything starts from a point and radiates outwards. This creates the "four directions" of north, south, east and west and is embodied in the four sides of the square. It's sort of a creation/origin event story captured in a gem. It's hard to explain in words, sorry about that. It's something that my mind intuitively grasps because of my life story and studies but like a lot of things in life, it's hard to put down into words.

Here is a gem carving I'm calling "Flame". This is a gorgeous golden citrine and it looks like someone took a tablespoon of the yummiest honey and shaped it just so. The way the light and curves flow within with liquid grace, how the colour washes around inside as you handle it in your fingers is just delicious. A wonderful citrine that I had alot of pleasure carving.

Australian black spinel is my favourite black gemstone and it always cuts a striking and super glossy gem. This beautiful black spinel has been cut in a classic pear design and will make the perfect pendant or ring stone. This is a stunning natural Australian blue sapphire from a very special location called the Lava Plains. This is actually a cattle station in North Queensland which has a very interesting volcanic geography and is sapphire bearing. The sapphires from this location have a rich deep royal blue hue and this beautiful sapphire is no exception. I have cut in it one of my designs, Allure which is a favorite of mine. A very fine sapphire and highly recommended.

I knew this carved amethyst was going to look great once it was set but how it finished up just exceeded all my expectations! I worked with the award winning Sydney jeweller, Roberto Mattei to create this unique, custom pendant. The design features 112 diamonds set in delicate curving tendrils of 18K yellow gold that grip and hold the richly hued amethyst in a loving embrace. To see this pendant in the hand and especially at night is dazzling, it truly is something special. This is one jewel that I am very very happy with. If required, a suitable gold chain and be arranged to complement this piece.

This is a wonderful natural rhodolite garnet from Tanzania that has a soft inner glow that is beguiling and beautiful to behold. The gem has the classic raspberry pinkish red hues that rhodolite is renown for and at night under lights it is truly magnificent. I picked this single particular stone from a large parcel of rhodolite, there was just something about it that sung to me... it had this glow that kept drawing my eye to it. The stone does have some of the usual fine silky needle inclusions (but is otherwise clean) that rhodolite often has and I think this is in part what gives the gem it's special glow. I knew as soon as I saw it that the Supernova Oval would be perfect for it and that was ultimately the design I ended up cutting. I have included some pics of the gem being faceted along with a couple of the original rough stone.

This beautifully hued gem is a bahia citrine from Brazil. The rich golden colour is lovely and the optical dishes I've carved come together to create an amazing inner world as the planets move and melt and flow into one another. If you look carefully you might also see a face. It has been carved with it being set as a ring or pendant in mind.
It is also pictured with two other carvings that I did at the same time from the same parcel of rough (1871, 1872, 1873).

Australian turquoise from Ammaroo Station in the Northern Territory is quite a scarce stone. The deposit is small and has only been sporadically mined over the years. The location is very remote and is situated north-east of Alice Springs, not far from the centre of Australia. High quality turquoise from Ammaroo Station is very rare indeed especially finer grade material that takes a high polish. It is sort after by collectors and makes beautiful jewellery.
This turquoise cabochon is natural, untreated and solid without any backing. It is a fine example of the best quality turquoise from this location and has a high polish. The colour is a beautiful blue hue and very similar to the turquoise from the Number 8 mine in Nevada, USA. I have attached some pics below showing a suite of Ammaroo turquoise and some Number 8 cabs. This piece has been finished in a sugarloaf-style rectangle cushion cabochon.

The chrysanthemum, as well as being one of my favourite flowers, is also a favoured symbol to work with. It's always been there in the background of my life and I see it used as a motif and symbol in virtually every culture in every age. With this piece I wanted to create a golden chrysanthemum so I engraved one onto a disk of quartz crystal which I then inlaid with 24K gold leaf. To that I then joined a disk of lapis lazuli... gold and lapis is a timeless classic combination.
As a jewellery design idea, a matched pair of these or a bespoke pair with your own design would be ideal for cufflinks or singularly as a lapel or tie pin. Would also make a pretty cool ring. If you're interested in something like this, get in touch! :-)

This moon gem is a natural Australian topaz lovely and silvery bright white and the whole idea of this design was to try and represent the full moon with a little star twinkling above. I think it works well. The 18k white gold that the topaz sits in acts as a kind of mirrored cup to capture and reflect the light. The little star is a diamond.

With this ring I wanted to explore curves and peaks and shoulder with a fantastical edge. My hand would often draw and doodle these sorts of curves and arcs idly on a piece of paper while daydreaming or listening to someone on the phone. At some point it clicked that I had this beautiful pink tourmaline and this vision of it being proudly held aloft by these graceful curves and I knew that I had to draw up a design for a ring.
On a more lighthearted note, my eyes are very much drawn to the particular styling of the shoulders of the ring. They remind me of spaulders and pauldrons which are components of a knight's plate armour that protect the shoulders. More specifically I think of those fantastical suits of armour in that game, World of Warcraft. What must I have been channeling when I designed this ring?
