Australian O'Briens Creek Natural Blue Topaz - Supernova Pear - 43.06ct
A truly exceptional natural Australian blue topaz from the O'Briens Creek gemfields in Far North Queensland. This remote area outside of the small township of Mt Surprise is where some of the best topaz is found in the world. There is a long history of tin miners and topaz fossickers coming here for over a century or more. The breathtaking landscape is one of ancient pink granite hills and valleys, creeks and rugged boulders. It is a special part of Australia and here is found a very special gem, the rare blue topaz. The blue colour is entirely natural and no one knows how it occurs and it’s particular colour zoning patterns, it truly is a mystery.
I faceted this gem to try and get the best blue colour I could from the rough stone. Correct orientation is very important with these blue topaz because of certain characteristics of topaz that can determine the intensity of the blue hue. The design is a favorite of mine, the Supernova Pear and really works well in this gem. This is a fine stone and blue topaz with this saturation and clarity over 40 carats are very rare. A superb natural Australian gemstone and one that would find a home in any collection or museum.
