Some of the rarest Australian sapphires are from the Oberon area in NSW. This is a region in the Blue Mountains where patches of sapphires can be found here and there. Good ones are very few and far between so when a client brought in this 16 carat beauty that he hand dug one weekend I was mighty impressed indeed... it's good to know rippers can still be found! :-)
It was a flawless crystal with excellent colour and without doubt the best I have personally seen from this location. It was a superb sapphire in every regard, the type of stone gemcutters dream about.
We decided to cut the sapphire to get two gems orientated down the C axis for the royal blue colour I knew was in there.
I opted for my favorite Supernova Oval design which always works well in sapphires.
In the end we finished up with two gems 2.6ct and 3.44ct eye clean perfectly matched with a stunning royal blue colour that the pics only begin to hint at.
Two uniquely special sapphires from the Blue Mountains.
