Rose Quartz - Bamboo Carving - 69.52ct

$3,150.00

This exquisite natural rose quartz carving depicts a small bundle of cut bamboo, crafted in the style of Japanese netsuke. Creating this piece was a true delight. I've had this rough stone for nearly three years before the inspiration to carve bamboo finally struck. This is often the case with gemstone carving; it can take time for a vision to emerge. I frequently go through my rough stones, pondering their potential, imagining what they might be, until an idea materializes that perfectly suits the piece.

Bamboo is a recurring motif in Asian cultures, rich with symbolism. As I carved this piece, I found it both relaxing and calming. I envisioned its smooth texture, straight lines, and gentle curves, reflecting on the serenity of bamboo in nature. I recalled a visit to a famous bamboo grove near Kyoto, where I wandered along its pathways, surrounded by towering bamboo and the tranquil atmosphere.

When working on a stone carving, I focus intently, visualizing the finished form and the essence it may embody. I can't help but wonder whether stones can absorb some measure of spirit from the person handling and working it, as completed carvings can possess a unique feel. Perhaps their form and spirit can help us reconnect to our own personal memories.

Another interesting element of this carving is the subtle incorporation of the Fibonacci sequence, also known as phi or the golden ratio. This mathematical ratio is prevalent in nature and follows the pattern: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, and so on. In this piece, the sequence manifests as follows: one finished piece, one small branch with two leaves, and three bamboo segments featuring five nodes, resulting in eight internodal segments.

I have applied a satin finish to the carving, which softens and enhances the lovely pink hue, giving the stone a radiant glow. The ends of the bamboo are polished to create the illusion of hollow pieces, adding contrast to the satin texture.
