When I was young I grew up in Bowen, North Queensland and over our summer we would always have swarms of beetles outside on the veranda in the evening under the lights. Had to open the door really quickly and not forget to close it otherwise those little black stink beetles would come in and smell up the place. There were also these beautiful iridescent christmas beetles that were like living jewels. The colours were vibrant, golds and greens shimmering.
I found three nice welo opals a little while back that I thought would perfectly capture the beauty of these christmas beetles (which are a type of scarab btw). I finally carved one and it turned out just how I hoped. The colours in the opal are the full spectrum of the rainbow and dance and play across the gem as you move it around. The ever shifting play of colour is totally beguiling.
This christmas beetle carving would make a special piece of jewellery, perhaps a bezel set pendant in yellow gold, that would really nice.
