Blue Zircon - Chrysanthemum - 4.01ct
The colour of this Cambodian zircon is truly beautiful and a prime example of the gems that come from this location. I cut this blue zircon in my Chrysanthemum design but instead of the usual smooth round crown I faceted it. I wanted to see how it looked and I was very pleased with the result. Now, with the pics they do look a little fuzzy inside the gem. This is because zircons are what's known as a birefringent gemstone. Birefringence is a measure of a gem's double refraction, a particular property of some gems that interacts with how light moves through the stone. It can create a sort of out-of-focus effect that really messes with a camera. To the naked eye it's not really that big a thing as a gemstone is a dynamic object but a camera takes a snapshot and freezes things in place and then you can zoom in, that's when you can notice it. Overall this gem is a stunning stone and will make an ideal ring or pendant.
