Australian Binbee Amethysts - Set of Nine - 54.1tcw
Here is a unique offering of nine superb and very rare amethysts from Binbee in North Queensland. Binbee is little more than a tiny railway siding midway on the road between Bowen and Collinsville. The amethyst deposit is located nearby and the story goes that way back when the road was being pushed through to Collinsville, as the bulldozer was scraping it’s way along the driver spotted some purple stones in the dirt which turned out to be amethysts. (Would love to hear from anyone if they know whether this is true or not, or what the real story was, but it sounds about right.)
The actual area where the amethysts are found is small, maybe the size of a tennis court or two. There is the main road and a train track which run right through the middle and on either side of that are fence lines marking the edge of the cattle property. Technically and legally you aren’t really allowed to dig on the side of a main road for obvious reasons but that hasn’t stopped people over the years from having a go.
On occasions in the past, I’ve pulled up and had a bit of a speck around and I can see where people have been digging fairly decent holes. I’ve only ever found small pea and bean sized amethysts myself and those amethysts that other people have shown me have also been small and lightly coloured. I have also seen one or two nice gems but nothing like this magnificent set of nine amethysts.
The owner of these Binbee amethysts dug here with his uncle 50 or 60 years ago back when I guess you could do that and no one was too concerned. The amethysts that they found are the best I’ve ever seen and I have not seen any Australian amethyst gems better than these. These gems are big for this location and the saturation and hues are excellent. Just one would be amazing but nine!!!
This set is for the serious collector of Australian gems and are genuinely rare and exceptional. They are of the highest quality and something quite special from a little known location. The pictures of the single stone are of the round gem in the centre - Supernova Round - 6.17ct - 11.71x11.68x8.91mm
PS. Bowen is my home town and I remember my dad taking me for digs at Binbee as a small kid. Can’t remember if we ever found anything but these amethysts bring back memories.
