Australian Binbee Amethyst - Hex Step Cut - 4.05ct
Uncle “Cooke” digging amethysts at Binbee near Bowen in the 1960’s. That is a serious hole to dig by hand!
A rare natural Australian amethyst from Binbee near Bowen in North Queensland. This is a very fine, well saturated amethyst with rich deep purple hues that has been cut in a Hex Step style design.
This gem is from a collection being released by a fellow who as a young lad on school holidays went digging with his uncle “Cooke” for amethysts at Binbee and topaz at O’Briens Creek. This was back in the 1960’s and from a time when you could dig at Binbee. The deposit is only very tiny, maybe the size of a tennis court, but there is now a main road running right through the middle of it and digging there is now forbidden. The amethyst from this location is, in my opinion, probably the best gem quality stones in Australia. It is exceptional material and definitely one for the collector of unusual gemstones.
