$4,500.00

This opal is from Coober Pedy in South Australia and was a wonderful piece to carve. The trick with opal is that you have to be very careful when carving it so that you don't grind the colour away, it requires a light touch and you have to follow the planes of colour. What is removed is the host rock and the colourless white and grey potch encompassing the colour bands. This gives the carving a very abstract organic appearance and it is a joy to reveal the rainbow of colours within.

The colours are primarily a layer of blue green on top of a layer of pink and they look much nicer in real life. Photographing opals is always challenging and it’s difficult if not impossible to truly capture the beautiful interplay of hues. This opal carving could be set as a pendant, brooch or other similar jewellery setting.
