Rough Gemstones
With this page I want to show you what gemstones look like in their rough forms before they are worked into gems and carvings. Each type of gem often comes in a range of hues and saturations. Colour is not just one specific hue but is a spectrum.
Take for example amethyst which is generally thought of as purple and indeed it is. However that purple can range from a light delicate hue called Rose de France through to a deep purple which can, on rare occasions, have a very desirable red flash and this is called Siberian amethyst.
Additionally, these illustrations might aid you in selecting a desired colour or saturation that you have in mind should you wish to commission a gem to be cut or carved. Think of them as a colour chart you can use.
Please note however that the rough gemstones shown below are not for sale as rough. Some of the pieces may have already been cut so a specific piece may not be available.

The rough gemstones that I have listed below are some of the stones that are available for commission work. Some stones shown may have been cut or carved but may be representative of other similar stones that are available. It can also serve as a point of reference if you are looking for a particular colour or saturation.
